Let’s catch those extras our main activity is sending. Hop over to our LineActivity java class. Wow, it still exists, this was like 4 ...pieces of clothing ago.

To get the data that’s coming from MainActivty we do this Bundle, PickupData, getIntent, getExtras. LineActivity knows which Activity opened it, so when we do get Intent it grabs the Intent from that activity, then get Extras gets what’s attached to that intent.

Hmm, but what if we get passed an intent with no data? Say we add another page to our app, but don’t pass data with it.

We can use a conditional to test whether our pickup Data variable is empty or not. Do this with an if statement, so if pickup Data equals to null, then just return. We use equals equals because we are testing if this condition is true not setting a variable

Doing a simple return just stops everything and the Line Activity goes on it’s way unchanged. If we get data from Main Activity we pull that String out of the Pickup Data bundle like this:

Received pickup line, then pickupData, and getString. Then we tell it what string to get by putting in that key of pickup line from the key value pair in the original intents' put Extra method.

After we get it, then it’s a matter of setting the pickup Line text view on Line Activity to a new variable and then running the set Text method on it while passing in the line we just received! Let’s give this a try in the emulator. Awesome! It’s working. We see it change the line to what we set in our Main Activity and overwriting the hardcoded one from the layout.

There is one last thing we need to do on this Line Activity, we need to tell the Rejected button to take us back home. Once again we use it’s ID, retry Button to set it to a new variable, then we set OnClicklistener to that button. For the call back method on this button we’ll put the Activity method, finish. Finish just sends us back to what launched the activity we are on. So our launch page. It’s a little pointless in a two page app when we can use the back button, but this is for demonstration purposes! If we emulate again’ we can click our Clean button, and then send ourselves back to the main Activity with the retry button.

Welcome to the CodeBabes Android virgin course, we’re gonna get hot and heavy with Android and show you how to build your own app, even if you’re a complete NEWB, plus we’ll introduce you to basic concepts of programming in Java, the language native android apps are written in. So get off Tinder and let’s get busy. I would totally swipe right on all of you, girls included. The app is called pickup line and let’s you pick clean or dirty, then displays a pickup line for you to use. Let’s get started, I promise to be gentle.

Let’s talk about Android for a hot minute. Android powers over a billion and people have downloaded like a Bajillion apps to run on those devices, which is where you come in. It’s built by Google and based on Linux. Plus it’s open source so anyone can download the source code, that’s why we have awesome mods like Cyanogen and Amazon can build their own app store and flavor of Android. Google develops Android in private then releases major versions under delicious Code Names like Jelly Bean, KitKat and the latest version 5.0 Lollipop.

To be an uber bad ass Android programmer you need to know Java, the language native android apps are written in. Java is an old school, super stable programming language that is used all over the place. Java is a statically typed object oriented language. Say what? Statically typed means we always have to tell Java what what’s in a variable or what your code is going to return, we’ll explain more later. Object oriented means everything is an object. Object oriented programming, or OOP let’s you separate your code into objects, or chunks of code that do specific things. When you first start learning OOP it’s gonna be hard. But remember, it’s like that super babe in school, you have to be persistent, really invest a lot of time and effort, but then when you get it, it’s awesome. We highly recommend reading up on OOP before diving in, but we’ll do our best to introduce some concepts.

The program we’ll use to develop Android apps is Android Studio, it’s free to download from Google. Just Google Android studio, the first result will be the download site at developer.android.com, which also has tons of documentation. Android Studio is an IDE or integrated development environment built specifically for android. Basically a super fancy bad ass text editor with a bajillion other features to make programming easier by helping you do stuff like debugging and code completion. It’s based on IntelliJ IDE made by JetBrains, a company that makes a bunch of IDE’s for a bunch of languages and other dev tools.

Here are some links to setup guides for different operating system, so if don’t have Android Studio running yet, pause the video and go set it up. If you’re on a mac just download and install, if you’re on a PC you might need the Java JDK too.

Let’s open Android Studio and start a new project. I’ll hold you hand while we go through these screens. The first thing that pops up is a welcome screen. If you’re just starting let’s do something first, go to configure then SDK manager and make sure install everything checked there. Your app talks to the API, which Talks to the SDK which makes your app run. Nex just click back and click start new project.

Now we name our application. We’re going to call this Pickup Line, then your Company Domain. This can be whatever you want, but we need it because it makes our app unique if you ever put it in the Google play store. That will create the package name you see in gray, com.codebabes.pickupline. That’s a naming convention for Java packages. And then at the bottom you see where the project is located on your computer.

Let’s click next. On this screen we choose what devices we want our app to run on. Nice try google, nobody wants to use Google Glass!

We’ll go with Android 4.4 Kitkat. If you click “help me choose” you’ll see a breakdown of API usage in all android devices, which is pretty cool. These jelly bean people to get their upgrade on.

Ok click next. On this screen we choose our ‘activity’. You’ll hear this term a lot as we progress. Activity is just how android refers to the different screens in your app, like the home screen or login screen. Let’s choose blank activity, but you should definitely come back to get busy with some of these other pre-built setups....

Are you concentrating now? Let’s get down to business and make our app interactive. So we’ve got one button hooked up, but it doesn’t do anything. That’s where event handling ...comes in. Event handling means we’re going to do something when an event happens, in this case, a button click. We do this by adding a listener, which is something that tells this button to hang out and listen for something, once the thing happens we can trigger something else, in this case we’ll change the text of the button. If the listener is triggered it runs the callback method.

Think of your stoner friend who hangs around and listens for you to smoke weed, that triggers him to ask you for some. His mooching ability is the weed listener and when he asks you to smoke him up, that’s the callback method.

Let’s make our clean button change our dirty button text. As long as we can select another view in android we can change it’s properties, doesn’t matter what type of view it is.

We’ll add a line below where we set our cleanButton variable, except now we grab dirtyButton with it’s ID and the R class.

Now below this we’ll say, "yo cleanButton listen up, if you get clicked you gotta do something." We do that using the cleanButton we created, so type cleanButton dot set On Click Listener. That’s how we tell cleanButton to start listening, but we need a little more code to give it a callback method. We start typing new View OnClickListener, but Android studio is like the NSA, it know exactly what you’re up to and gives you an autocomplete option. If you hit tab Android Studio gets freaky and writes a whole block of code for you.

What the hell is this! Well View Onclicklistener is an interface and this code defines an anonymous inner class and creates an instance of it. If your eyes just glazed over and you started drooling we don’t blame you, we could spend an entire course dissecting this code. For now just know all this code let’s you stick a callback in this onClick method, that’s the shit that gets run when the button is clicked.

You probably don’t even remember what we were talking about since I just mind fucked you so hard, but we want to change the text of dirtyButton when clean button gets clicked. We access that dirtyButton variable, let’s type that and then setText, and we pass the string variable pickupLine to it, this will change the text of the dirtyButton to the new string. But whoa what the heck was that, a final keyword just got added to our DirtyButton and PickupLine, that’s because we’re using these variables from within this anonymous inner class. Final, just means don’t change these freaking variables, because if we do, it would fuck up their use in the inner class. Let’s emulate this shit, and we click the clean button and see our bottom button change. Amazing, but not exactly what we want. We need to find a way to open our second activity screen and pass data too it, in this case, our pickup line. And then use our retry button to bring us back! The way we do that is with intents, which is how activities talk to each other. And after you pass the quiz, i’ll have an intent to remove a piece of clothing!

Alright, are you ready for the “hard” stuff? We’ve talked about where you can stick your data, but what about storing actions, stuff that manipulates ...that data? We need functions.

We’ve already seen some functions in action, like prompt and alert. These functions are baked into the language. You can just use them. When you pass a value into them, that value is called an argument.

When you are using alert you are calling the alert function. You’re saying hey, function do some shit.

But you can also write your own functions which is where things start to get interesting. If you weren’t interested already. (Push up)

Let’s create a simple function named cockBlock. Write the keyword “function”, then the name of the function, cockBlock, then parentheses, which remain empty for a simple function like this, then a set of braces to define the block that the function will execute when called. Inside there we’ll put the alert, "keep it in your pants." It’s good to have a function name relate to what it’s actually doing.

Now let’s go back to our html page and refresh. You’ll see that nothing happens. This is because you have to call the function before it will run.

To call a function, just write out the function name, the two parentheses and a semicolon. When you refresh the page you’ll see an alert pop up.

Let’s get a little more advanced. Functions can also contain variables. So let’s create a function called addNumbers. In the function block we’ll add the variables A equals 2 and B equals 10. Then sum is equal to A plus B. We use the return keyword to get the function to output a value when called. We’ll do return sum. Now if we log the function call, we’ll see 12.

But that’s pretty rigid, the only thing we can get out is 12. That’s where arguments come in. Instead of putting the variables in the function block, we’ll put them in the parentheses after the function name, like this: (gesture)

Now the A and B values are going to be passed in as arguments when the function is called. Call the function addNumbers and then in the parentheses of the function call we put the arguments, let’s do 7 and 11. The great thing about functions is they can be used over an over. They’re a great way to make your code more modular.
